The main components of ink are as follows:

Pigment is the solid component of ink, which is the color-developing substance of ink and is generally a water-insoluble pigment. The saturation, tinting power, transparency and other properties of ink color are closely related to the properties of pigment.

The binder is the liquid component of ink, and the pigment is the carrier. During the printing process, the binder carries the pigment particles from the ink half of the printing press through the ink roller, printing plate, and rolling to the substrate to form an ink film, which is fixed, dried and adhered to the substrate. The gloss, dryness, mechanical strength and other properties of the ink film are related to the properties of the binder.

The additives added to the ink are to improve the printing suitability of the ink, such as viscosity, adhesion, dryness, etc.

With the development of printing technology, the variety of inks continues to increase, and there are many ways to classify them. If classified by printing method, there are five types:

Letterpress ink: book black ink, rotary black ink, color letterpress ink, etc.;

Lithographic ink: offset glossy resin ink, offset rotary ink, etc.;

Gravure ink: photogravure ink, engraved gravure ink, etc.;

Stencil printing ink: copy plate ink, screen ink, etc.;

Special printing ink: foaming ink, magnetic ink, fluorescent ink, conductive ink, etc.

The ink configuration process is relatively complicated. Generally, the pigment, binder and various additives are mixed into an oily paste in an ink dispenser according to a certain proportion, and then repeatedly ground in a roller grinder or in a mill to make the pigment dispersed evenly in the binder in fine particles.
